Canadian GP: Alonso tops FP1 as Verstappen hails Perez extension

Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso set the pace in opening practice for the Canadian Grand Prix, with Sergio Perez's contract extension hailed as a "great move" by Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen.

After a wet start to the weekend in Montreal, the track dried out in time for FP1, with Alonso clocking a best time of 1:13.125 to finish 0.074 seconds clear of Ferrari's Carlos Sainz.

Verstappen was third fastest, 0.147secs off the pace, and said he was pleased with the team's performance.

"It was a good start to the weekend," said Verstappen.

"The car felt competitive and I'm happy with the balance."

Perez, who signed a two-year extension with Red Bull on Thursday, was fourth fastest, 0.183secs off the pace.

"It's a great move for the team," said Verstappen.

"Checo is a great driver and he's been an important part of our success this year."
